So tonight I gave my first attempt at Red Velvet Cake Pops. They took a little longer than I expected time-wise, but were very easy to make!!
Materials you’ll need (I lost my receipt so unfortunately don’t have the prices.. no individual material cost me more than $10):
- Red Velvet Cake Mix – I used Duncan Hines Moist Deluxe bought at Target
- Cream Cheese Frosting – I used Betty Crocker Rich & Creamy bought at Target
- Candy Melts – I used Wilton Coloburst Brights bought at Michaels
- Lollipop Sticks – I used Wilton Lollipop Sticks bought at Michaels
- A Styrofoam semicircle (optional) – I bought this at Michaels for setting the cake pops
- Eggs, Water, and Vegetable Oil
You’re going to want to follow the directions on your cake batter mix in order to bake your cake- estimated time between 30-40 minutes. LET YOUR CAKE COOL.
Just to give you an idea of the consistency I had/the amount of balls I rolled.
Once the cake had cooled down, I mushed it into crumbs using my hands (in my opinion the most efficient way) scooping in giant spoonfuls of icing until I got the correct consistency. I ended up mixing in about half the can of icing, but do whatever feels right to you!
- I read the whole “do whatever feels right” and scoffed, but once you get started mushing it all together it’s quite easy to determine how much you’ll need.
After mushing it all together into a consistency where a ball form would hold, I rolled my cake into roughly about 32 pieces. I then stuck them onto a metal tray with foil and put them all into the freezer while I attempted the candy melt coating.
TIP: Read the directions of how to melt the coating. I know it sounds silly but it took me two attempts before I got it right, simply by following the directions to a T.
I microwaved the melts on “defrost” mode for 1:00 then stirred them- I didn’t use all of them (I was only giving the trial run to 4 cake pops) so that amount of time was sufficient to melt them.
Next I pulled the balls out of the freezer (they were cold, but not frozen) and stuck them onto the lollipop sticks- the sticks had a pointy end, which made them easy to pierce the balls without losing their shape.
I used a tiny tupperware cup for the candy melts, and simply dipped the ball into the melted “frosting” and used my finger to smooth it all out. I then stuck the sticks into the semicircle styrofoam.
Final Step: eat ’em and enjoy!! (took my nailpolish off- DISCLAIMER: if you’re using red velvet cake your hands WILL get a red tint from the food coloring. It washed well off with dish soap and a sponge) Happy Cake Popping 🙂
